ANAMOSA — It was a packed house in Anamosa on Monday night as a large group of Iowa high school girls wrestlers competed in the Raiders’ home tournament. Three area teams were present as Washington, WACO and Mid-Prairie all made the trip.
Among the area teams, there were three champions. WACO brought home two first-place finishes, and Washington had one.
The Warriors sent three wrestlers to the meet, and all three finished in the top-2. Heaven Steege and Grace Fort both walked away champions.
Steege competed in the 124-126 weight class. She had to battle to a win in sudden victory in her first match but came back to score back-to-back pins to follow. Her final pin was in just 19 seconds over Linn-Mar’s Carly Bumgartner.
Fort, who competed in the 167-170 class, had a pair of pins as well, taking down Waverly-Shell Rock’s Mary Carolus and Charles City’s Kylie Vance, both in the first period. She won her third match by forfeit.
WACO’s Bralyyn Wagler finished second in the 202-215 class, going 1-1 on the day.
Washington’s Teegan Sulentich had a 2-0 day to win the 171-182 bracket. She defeated Solon’s Emilee Suchomel by fall, and defeated Libby Dix of Mount Vernon in a 12-0 major decision to take first.
Washington’s Jillian Langstraat picked up a third-place finish for the Demons. She had one win in the 105-106 class, a 4-1 decision over Solon’s Gretchen Marcy.
Mid-Prairie brought the biggest group of the three schools, bringing nine athletes to the meet. The Golden Hawks had three wrestlers finish second.
Ainsley Luech took second in the 128-129 class. She went 1-1 with a win by forfeit. Marissa Cline used a pin and a decision to take second at 132-135, and Madison Kelly finished second at 140-145, going 2-1 with a couple decisions.
Mid-Prairie’s Mia Garvey, Gronwyn Brenneman and Grace Conway all finished third. Gabi Robertson, Ashlee Farrier and Ellie Brenneman all took fourth.
