Area runners off to state
Class 3A teams run in Mt. Pleasant

MT. PLEASANT — The 2024 state track and field tournament will feature Demons, Panthers and Trojans after all three schools qualified athletes for this week’s meet during the district meet in Mt. Pleasant on Thursday night.
The night saw a district championship out of the Washington girls. The Demons were able to qualify in eight events automatically, including a double qualifier out of 400-meter hurdlers Leighton Messinger and Ryen Pepper.
Messinger was a double qualifier. She also took first in the 100-meter hurdles.
Washington’s Iris Dahl qualified in a pair of events. Dahl will represent the Demons in both the 800-meter run and the 1500.
Washington also qualified the 4X800 team of, Lauren Horak, Abigail Kleese, Kendall Hinrichsen and Dahl, the shuttle hurdle quartet of Pepper, Leighton Salazar, Hinrichsen and Messinger, the distance medley squad of Ada Kendall, Eden Levetzow, Jaedyn Moore and Dahl, and the 4X100 team of Kendall, Messinger, Salazar and Moore.
Salazar didn’t qualify automatically in the long jump, but her leap was far enough to get her through with an at-large bid.
The Demon boys qualified a slew of athletes, including Josh Anderson, who will be going to state in the 100-meter wheelchair, the 400-meter wheelchair and the 200-meter wheelchair.
Micah Rees and Andrew Rees made it through in the 3200. Micah Rees moved through in the 1600 as well.
Washington had an individual qualifier in Seth Shepherd. Shepherrd made it through in the 400-meter dash.
In the field, Greyson Hartman qualified for the Demon boys in the shot put.
Qualifying in the relay events for Washington were the 4X800 team of Logan McDole, Tyler Alderton, Sawyer Tschantz and Micah Rees, as well as the distance medley team of Keider Gomez-Valdez, Kael Williams, Alec Ulin and Micah Rees, and the 4X100 quartet of Gomez-Valdez, Williams, Jayfred Espinosa and Ulin.
The Mt. Pleasant girls had a handful of automatic qualifiers at the meet. Included in that were three throwers, as Kya Goodrich and Savannah Slobodnik both qualified in the discus throw, and Ella Ensminger made it in the shot up.
Bailey Jalas will represent Mt. Pleasant in the long jump. Alex Scott advanced in eh 100-meter dash.
In relay events, the sprint medley squad of Courtney Raub, Bailey Jalas, Kynlee White and Alex Scott made it through. Also qualifying was the 4X100 team of White, Alex Scott, Jalas and Andi Scott, and the 4X200 team of Kiyah Sanders, White, Alex Scott and Andi Scott.
White made the 200-meter dash as an at-large. Josie Gilmore moved on as an at-large in the high jump.
The Mt. Pleasant boys track team will be represented by Avin Truong. Truong makes state in the long jump competition.
The Fairfield boys will move on in the sprint medley, as Aidan Kreuter, Ousman Saine, Tallon Bates and Gabe Tejada moved on. Tejada was also a qualifier in the 800.
Fairfield will be represented by both high jumpers ont eh boys’ side. Eli Zillman and Ryan Giberson each made it through.
On the girls’ side, Lilly Bergren will represent Fairfield individually in the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles. Also qualifying was the shuttle hurdle team of Maya Lane, Bergren, Isabel McCready and Hailey Reinier.
In the throwing events, Elyse Setterstrom will represent the Trojans in the discus throw.
