WAYLAND — The Pekin softball team saw an offensive explosion like no other on Tuesday night in Wayland. The Panthers put up 28 runs in four innings to knock off WACO 28-4 in Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division play.
Pekin scored 23 of those runs in the even innings. The Panthers batted through the lineup for a 14-run inning in the second and a nine-run inning in the fourth.
Pekin held a 16-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth, when WACO finally got rolling on offense. The Warriors put up four runs in the bottom of the second before Pekin finished it out with the next 12.
“It was nice to see our girls patient at the plate, and working with what they had,” said Pekin head coach Aaron Ledger. “WACO is a young team, and two years ago, were in the same boat. Our girls went up, worked at bats and took what was given to them.”
Pekin’s biggest hit of the day came in the top of the fourth when Myah Bainbridge blasted a home run to left field, hitting a parked truck on one hop. It was her third homer on the year already.
“I didn’t really have any balls to hit today, I just got walked the whole time,” said Bainbridge. “So I was happy to see it.”
Bainbridge identified the owner of the truck she hit as freshman leadoff hitter Carlie Gambell’s uncle.
Gambell had a nice day herself, going 3-for-5 with a triple, a double and two RBIs in the win. Bainbrdige had two hits, including the home run, and co-led the team with three RBIs. Abby Guise had a triple, a double and three RBIs.
Anna Hadley finished with two hits and an RBI in the win. Kendra Schultz and Mikayla Schuttlefield each had two RBIs.
Ezra Parsons picked up the win in the circle, throwing two innings and giving up four earned runs. Addison Smith pitched two shutout innings in relief.
