Area softball players named 3A All-District
Local quartet features two Demons, one Trojan and one Golden Hawk
The Iowa Girls High School Girls Coaches Association released its All-District teams this week, and the Class 3A Southeast team has four names from Union area teams.
Two Washington players made the 15-player list, which highlights the best of the best in Southeast Iowa. One Fairfield player was named, as was one Mid-Prairie player.
Washington was represented by a pair of underclassmen, as both sophomore Ella Greiner and freshman Leighton Salazar made the list.
Greiner is coming off a huge year at the plate, as she hit .475 with five home runs and 39 RBIs. She finished second in average and led or coled the team in both power categories.
Salazar hit a team high .550 this summer. She led the Demons with 13 doubles and three triples, and also knocked in 24 RBIs.
Greiner and Salazar weren’t the only Southeast Conference players on the Class 3A list. Fairfield’s Coty Engle made the team after closing out her senior year with the Trojans.
Offensively, Engle led the team with a .390 batting average, and also drew 26 walks on the year, which led the Trojans. Engle tied for first on the team with five doubles and two triples.
Engle also continued her role as an ace in the circle. She went 10-8 with a 3.09 ERA and 103 strikeouts.
Mid-Prairie sophomore Dakota Mitchell represented the Golden Hawks on the list. Mitchell hit .439 this year with seven doubles, a team-leading four triples and two home runs. Mitchell also walked 17 times, which led the team.
