As usual, area softball teams got their money’s worth in a packed weekend of prep action. The following games all took place from Thursday to Saturday.
The weekend slate included a couple of clashes between area teams, as Highland and Hillcrest Academy both outlasted Winfield-Mount Union.
Highland 17, Winfield-Mount Union 1 (4)
The Huskies scored 10 runs in the fourth inning to put the game away via the 12-point mercy rule and pick up a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division victory on Thursday.
Abigail Pierson had a big one for the Huskies. She finished 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Lilly Barre was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Jessica Kraus gave up just one earned run over four innings to pick up the win for Highland in the circle.
WMU catcher Anna Anderson was 1-for-2 with an RBI to lead the Wolves. Josie Nelson had the team’s only other hit.
Wapello 13, Hillcrest Academy 1 (3)
Hillcrest Academy couldn’t contain a tough Wapello offense on Thursday.
Kylee Statler was 1-for-2 with a first-inning RBI to lead the Ravens’ offense.
Hillcrest Academy 16, Winfield-Mount Union 12
Hillcrest Academy won a wild one, beating WMU by four runs in a SEISC North slugfest on Friday.
The Ravens were led by Lydia Beachy, who went just 1-for-4 with a double but knocked in a team-high five RBIs in the win. Morgyn Nafziger was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Kylee Statler knocked in two.
Malia Yoder gave up 12 runs (nine earned) over seven innings of work in the circle, which was good enough to earn the sophomore a win.
WMU senior Keely Malone was 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs in the loss. Anna Anderson went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, and Quin Smith was 3-for-5 with one RBI.
Louisa-Muscatine 13, Columbus 1
The Wildcats couldn’t contain first-place Louisa-Muscatine in a road game on Thursday.
Ellie Sanders was 1-for-2 with a triple in the loss. Lily Coil had the Wildcats’ only RBI.
Lone Tree 10, Pekin 0
The Panthers had trouble in a SEISC North road game. Pekin collected just four hits on the day.
Quinnlyn Baker, Payten Coleman, Sadie Sieren and Katelynn Shultz all had singles in the loss.
Louisa-Muscatine 14, Pekin 2 (4)
A pair of second-inning runs were all the Panthers could muster in a road loss to L & .
Payten Coleman went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI in the loss. Anna Hadley was 1-for-2 with a double.
Chariton 9, Cardinal 5
The Comets had the game down to one run going into the sixth, but the unbeaten Chargers scored three in the top of the inning to get separation in a South Central Conference battle.
Ava Ferrell went 1-for-4 with four RBIs in the loss. [Kinsey Hissem was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Both Emma Becker and Ashlynn Patrick collected a pair of RBIs as well.
Knoxville 14, Cardinal 2
The Comets led by two runs early but Knoxville had too much for them in an SCC clash on Friday.
Brinlee Ostrander went 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Cardinal offense in the loss.
Cardinal 3, Pella Christian 0
The Comets bounced right back on Saturday after a couple of tough losses, by knocking off Pella Christian 3-0.
Cardinal scored all three of its runs in the first inning and then shut the Eagles out for the rest of the game. Pella Christian collected just two hits on the day.
Montezuma 11, Keota 0
The Eagles lasted five innings with the Bravettes, but Montezuma scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth and Keota couldn’t get within 10 in its fifth at-bat.
Holy Trinity Catholic 13, New London 0 (4)
It was a rough one for the Tigers against the rival Crusaders in SEISC South play.
New London had just two hits on the day. Megna Lee and Kaitlyn Lee each had a single.
Davis County 14, New London 2 (3)
New London had a daunting task, playing unbeaten Davis County at the Mustangs’ home tournament.
Sophie Malott was 1-for-2 with an RBI in the loss. That was New London’s only hit of the game. Natalie Burden and Emma Nye each scored a run.
Moravia 21, New London 3 (6)
The game was 0-0 after three innings, but Moravia absolutely exploded in the middle innings, scoring 21 runs combined from the fourth to sixth frames.
Megan Lee went 2-for-3 in the loss. Olivia Hester was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Van Buren County 13, Danville 1 (3)
The Warriors rolled the Bears in SEISC South play.
Ashlynn Huff went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the win. Ivy Davidson was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored.
Ally Cambell gave up just one earned run on one hit over a three-inning complete game.
Van Buren County 2, Mediapolis 1
The Warriors could only muster two runs, but that’s all they needed, as Ally Cambell gave up just one earned run on four hits over seven innings. Cambell struck out seven Mediapolis batters.
Ashlynn Huff, Ivy Davidson and Annabelle Cormier each had two hits in the win. Jade Balmer had the team’s only RBI.
Centerville 7, Van Buren County 1
Despite a couple of hits by Ashlynn Huff and an RBI by Jade Balmer, the Warrior softball team fell at home in a non-conference clash.
Van Buren County 8, Montezuma 4
The Warriors had all eight runs by the end of the fourth inning in a non-conference home win.
Kylee Roan finished the game 1-for-2 for two RBIs to lead VBC. Ashlynn Huff and Annabelle Cormier each had two hits and an RBI, and Lexee Fritz had the team’s only extra-base hit, with a double.
Addison Brauns earned the win in the circle for Van Buren County, giving up just four earned runs over 6.1 innings of work.
