Cardinal’s near-miss of a Top-10 upset highlighted Tuesday’s area softball action.
No. 10 (3A) Chariton 2, Cardinal 1
Cardinal nearly knocked off a ranked Class 3A team on the road, but the Chargers scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to steal the game away.
Freshman Summer LaRue led the team, going 2-for-3 with a double. Ava Ferrell had a pair of hits, and Ashlynn Patrick knocked one runner in.
Nicoa McClure was tagged with a tough loss, giving up just two earned runs over six innings.
No. 8 (1A) Sigourney 18, Keota 0
The Savages put up 18 runs in two innings to knock off Keota in a three-inning game.
No. 8 (1A) Sigourney 15, Keota 1
The Eagles scored one run in the bottom of the first, but Sigourney’s offense was too much to handle. The Savages put up seven in the top of the first, four in the fourth and four more in the fifth.
Holy Trinity Catholic 12, New London 0
The Tigers couldn’t collect any hits against Holy Trinity’s Mary Hellige, as the Tigers were shut down in a three-inning game.
Van Buren County 13, Mediapolis 1
The Warriors blasted the Bullettes in Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division play.
Ashlynn Huff went 3-for-3 with three RBIs in the win for VBC. Sophia Jirak was 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Ivy Davidson, Jade Balmer, Ally Cambell and Riley Cavaness all had RBIs, and Cambell picked up the win in the circle.
Hillcrest Academy 15, Winfield-Mount Union 2
Hillcrest Academy scored seven runs in the second and seven more in the third to run away with a SEISC North game in Winfield.
Delaney Shaw had a big game, going 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs for the Ravens. Kylee Statler, Malia Yoder, Erin Bontrager and Lydia Beachy all knocked in two.
Yoder earned the win in the circle.
WMU was led by Anna Anderson, who went 1-for-1 with a double. Jessi Renken knocked in one run.
Louisa-Muscatine 16, Pekin 0
The Panthers were upended at home by Louisa-Muscatine, thanks in part to a three-inning no-hitter thrown by Falcon freshman Hannah Kissell.
