Area teams battle at Fort Madison Invitational
Columbus/WMU leads area with 10th-place finish

FORT MADISON — Five area schools took part in last weekend’s Fort Madison wrestling invitational. Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union, Washington, New London, Cardinal and Highland all battled in a stacked tournament down south.
The top result from the tournament went to Columbus/WMU, which took 10th place, with 219 points. Washington finished 13th. New London was 16th. Cardinal finished 17th, and Highland took 18th.
Columbus/WMU had just one finalist in the tournament. Riley Kaalberg finished second place in the 165-pound bracket. Kaalberg fell in the opening round but battled his way back through the wrestlebacks and ended up falling in the first place match against Benton Community’s Blayke Heying.
Washington’s Aaron Boone took first place in the 132-pound bracket to lead the Demons. Boone continued his undefeated season by winning eight matches, including a 12-6 decision over C.J. Davis of Notre Dame in the first place match.
The Demons had a third place finisher in Blaine Rees. Rees took the bronze at 175 pounds, beating Joey Glendening over Notre Dame in the third place match.
New London’s top finisher in the tournament was Gage Burden. Burden took second place in the 138-pound bracket, winning seven matches. Burden fell in the first place match against Landen Davis of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.
Cardinal’s lone Top-3 finisher was Kyran Spees, who took third place at 138 pounds. He won four matches, including a third-place victory over Chris Moore of Ottumwa. His lone loss was to Burden.
Highland didn’t have any Top-3 finishers. The Huskies’ best finisher was Cash Cole, who took sixth at 113 pounds.
