Area teams lace up shoes at jamboree

Fairfield 28, Cardinal 27

PACKWOOD ? The Fairfield girls? basketball team squeaked out a 28-27 victory over Cardinal at the Pekin Jamboree Tuesday.

The Trojans trailed Cardinal before going on a 14-6 run in the final quarter of the two-period contest.

Fairfield was led by Serena Ward, who scored 13 points to go along with three boards. Both Sidney Baumann and Jessica Lamb finished with four points and three rebounds. On defense, Hanna Greiner helped out with two steals.

Fairfield is set to host Iowa City West on Tuesday, while Cardinal will travel to Van Buren Saturday to open the 2011-12 season.

Van Buren 23, Keota 13

PACKWOOD ? Hanna Haynes and Makenzie Zeitler combined to score all but two of Van Buren?s points and the Warriors toppled Keota 23-13 to open the Pekin Jamboree Tuesday.

Haynes and Zeitler also grabbed eight and six boards, respectively. Jessica Saunders chipped in the two remaining points.

The Warriors will open the season Saturday hosting SEISC south division rival Cardinal.

Pekin 22, Moravia 12

PACKWOOD ? The Pekin girls? basketball team jumped out to a quick lead Tuesday and never looked back, beating Moravia 22-12 to conclude its home jamboree.

Emily Ellis scored a team-high five points and made the Panthers? lone three-pointer. Brandy Millikin, Jessica Horras and Samantha Wright scored four points each. Defensively, Cheyann Lankford and Millikin snatched four and three steals, respectively.

Pekin will open the season Tuesday at Lone Tree.
