Area teams show out at Steve Roth Relays
Columbus post second-highest team score

WASHINGTON — For the Union area’s Washington Demons, Mt. Pleasant Panthers, Fairfield Trojans, Columbus Wildcats, Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves, WACO Warriors and Keota Eagles it was a great night of competition at the Demons Steve Roth Relays.
Six of the seven squads posted at least one winner when all was said and done in the Thursday night boys meet.
Columbus had one of the best outings as a squad.
The Wildcats finished with 168 total team points, which was good enough to win the Class C division title. It was also the second-highest team score on the evening by any squad.
Only Mediapolis finished with more.
WMU finished in eighth, Washington 10th, WACO 12th, Mt. Pleasant 18th, Fairfield 21st and Keota 26th.
Columbus had six individual winners, along with the 4x100 of Riley Kaalberg, Kaden Amigon, Triston Miller and Jeff Hoback.
Hoback was an individual winner as well, taking the 100-meter dash in 11.39.
Amigon took the Class C 200-meter title after clocking a 23.83.
Miller grabbed two wins on the night, taking the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.11 and also took the high jump crown with a leap of five feet eight inches.
Damian Vergara won the 1,600-meter run in 4:55.
Russell Coil’s top toss of 43’11.5 was best in the shot put.
The 4x800 relay team of Vergara, Cael Phillips, Cole Storm and Tim Hills-Carrier also picked up a division win in the time of 9:01.80.
Host Washington represented well in class A.
Senior Elijah Morris was best in the division with a 100-meter time of 10.79 seconds. It was also the top time across all classes.
Brayden Hartman picked up a win in the shot put, tossing the shot 55’06.00.
Alec Ulin joined Morris, Ethan Patterson and Jude Brown to set a meet record in the 4x200, winning in 1:31.
Freshman Josh Anderson also set meet records in both the 100 and 200-meter wheelchair runs.
Winfield-Mount Union ended up with three individual division winners.
Kholby Newsom won the 800-meter in Class C in 2:08.
WMU’s Gabriel Hemsworth was best in the 400 hurdles clocking a time of 57.80.
Cam Buffington won the long jump with a leap of 20’10.00.
Wolves quartet of Abram Edwards, Newsom, Hemsworth and Buffington teamed up to win the distance medley in Class C.
WACO picked up a fourth-place finish in Class C.
Odee Shtefanchuk, not only won the division in the discus, but his toss of 141’02.50 was best across all classes.
The Warriors also had the best time in the division in the 4x110 shuttle hurdles, as Clayton Miller and Gage Samo, along with Isaac Oswald and Simeon Reichenbach finished the event in just under 1:07.76.
For Mt. Pleasant, Will Davidson was the lone winner. The Panther also picked up a pair of second-places as well.
Davidson dashed his way to a win in the 200-meter with a time of 22.38.
He also finished second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.74.
Isaac Jerrel was the other second-place finisher for the Panthers. Jerrel tossed the shot put 49’05.50 for second.
Fairfield’s lone winner on the day was Ryan Giberson in high jump. Giberson leapt 5’10 for the top spot in the division B. Only one jumped higher in the competition.
The Trojans also got a second-place finish in division B from Dylan Adam, who posted a time of 1:01.54 in the 400-meter hurdles.
Keota had no winners on the day, but the 4x110 meter shuttle hurdle of Jacob Libe, Chase Haifley, Luke Moeller and Dalton Dodd finished third in division C.
