Area teams win conference clashes

It was a jam packed slate of Union Area boys basketball over the past few days. A few area teams played games on back-to-back nights. Southeast Iowa Super Conference play is in full swing, and a few area small schools faced one another as they vie for early momentum.
Mid-Prairie, Cardinal and Keota also had conference contests, while Van Buren County and New London clashed in an All-Union SEISC South matchup.
Here are the latest results from area boys basketball games.
SEISC North
Hillcrest Academy emerged from the weekend 2-0 after taking down Columbus on Friday. Kale Bailey paced the Ravens with 24 points.
The Wildcats were playing in their second game in as many days after defeating North Cedar 67-49 in a nonconference game Thursday.
WACO got its season off to a strong start with a win over Pekin on Friday. The Warriors held the Panthers to single digits in the first two quarters, and weathered a 24-point third quarter to hang on to a 61-55 victory.
Despite the defeat, Cole Millikin had a strong outing with 23 points to lead Pekin. Riley Smith and Alijah Brock were also in double figures.
Winfield-Mt. Union also moved to 2-0 in SEISC North play with a 46-36 win over Lone Tree on Friday. Max Edwards and Cody Milks combined for 27 points.
Highland lost a pair of nonconference games with a road defeat to English Valleys 85-62 on Thurdsay and a 81-55 loss to Cedar Valley Christian on Friday. The Huskies (0-3) are still in search of their first win.
SEISC South
Van Buren County got its first win of the season with a 60-56 victory over New London on Friday. Jace Duncan led the Warriors with 15 points. Will Cocherell and Brandon Taylor were also in double figures.
The Tigers drop to 0-2 on the young season. Brigham Porter led New London with 16 points in the narrow loss.
VBC nearly pulled off two wins in two days, but lost a nail biter to Centerville 79-77 on Saturday. The high scoring affair featured 62 combined points from Cocherell, Duncan and Landry Loeffler and 50 points from Centerville’s Malachi Rice.
SCC
Cardinal dropped a pair of games on back-to-back days. The Comets started South Centeral Conference play with a 103-49 loss to Centerville on Friday and fell narrowly to Moravia 59-51 on Saturday.
SICL
Keota improved to 2-0 on the season with both wins having come against South Iowa Cedar League competition. The Eagles latest victory came over HLV/TC 62-45 on Friday. Jackson Vittetoe scored 21 points in the win.
River Valley
Mid-Prairie improved to 2-0 on the season with a 60-47 win over Camanche on Friday. Brooks Weber led the way for the Golden Hawks with 20 points
