Weiss-led MSAE blanks Burlington

Weiss-led MSAE blanks Burlington
A sweep through the Burlington tennis lineup was completed by the Maharishi School boys? tennis team Tuesday afternoon, including a win by Thomas Weiss over 2008 Class 2A state qualifier Brock Anderson at No. 1 singles.
Weiss, a freshman, battled back and forth with Anderson to take a 7-5, 6-4 victory and get the Pioneers rolling. The next five stormed through the Grayhounds with no set being closer than 6-3.
Joseph Gelfand won 6-0, 6-2; Derek Thatcher won 6-1, 6-2; Sam Arsanjani won 6-0, 6-1; Jay Stewart won 6-1, 6-1, and Brenton Schwartz put MSAE up 6-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles.
No. 1 doubles was another battle in which MSAE prevailed as Gelfand and Thatcher teamed up for a 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 win. Weiss and Arsanjani didn?t give up a game winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles and Stewart and Schwartz added to the total with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3.
With the season in full swing and MSAE the same way, they will host the Pioneer Invitational starting at 9 a.m. Saturday. Fairfield, Davis County, Albia and Burlington-Notre Dame are expected to be in attendance.
Fort Madison ousts Trojans, 7-2
FORT MADISON ? Following a win against Mount Pleasant last Friday, Justin Bradfield won his second No. 1 singles match in as many tries, but Fairfield lost the team score at Fort Madison Tuesday by a final score of 7-2.
Bradfield triumphed 6-0, 7-5 vs. Trent Eaves and also played a part in Fairfield?s other victory of the day teaming up with Nathan Hurley for a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles. Kyle Brewington, Ryan Brewington, Alan Chen, George Winland and Will Gaub all saw varsity action in singles for Fairfield
Gaub also won an 8-4 match in JV singles for the Trojans.
Fairfield will once again look for a mark in the win column when they visit Davis County on Thursday.
Pioneer girls blast Burlington-Notre Dame
BURLINGTON ? The Maharishi School girls? tennis team moved to 1-1 on the season with a 7-2 victory over Burlington-Notre Dame Saturday at Dankwardt Park in Burlington.
The Pioneers won five of six singles events including Angela Sickler?s 8-2 win in the No. 1 match up. Minna Mohammdi fell behind 1-6, but rallied back for a 9-7 victory at No. 2, Mollie Cutler won 8-1 at No. 3, Nofiya Denbaum won 8-3 at No. 4 and Leya Alderfer won 8-2 at No. 5. Notre Dame?s Elaine Godfrey espcaped with a 9-7 win at No. 6 singles.
MSAE brought the same dominance into doubles play winning two of the three matches. Cutler and Denbaum won an 8-5 decision at No. 2 doubles and Rose Hoffman and Raina Dollive picked up an 8-3 victory at No. 3. The duo of Kelly Gehringer and Sami Wells broke through for a Burlington-Notre Dame 9-8 (7-3) win.
