Washington’s Greyson Hartman has already set the tone for his upcoming shot put season.
The Demons junior achieved a personal record of 65 feet, 2¼ inches at the Dickinson Relays on Monday. The mark not only highlights an individual best, but would also give Hartman the eighth best shot put throw in state history.
Hartman easily finished first in the boys competition at Monday’s event. He beat out Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Shem Mally by over seven feet. Hartman’s throw was also just under 10 feet further than his toss of 55 feet, four inches that earned him a fourth-place finish at state last year.
After competing for the Demons on the gridiron last fall, Hartman looks poised to have a strong season when outdoor track begins. Washington will kick things off when it hosts the Steve Roth Relays on March 26. Washington athletes will also compete in the 2026 IATC Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center in Ames.
Several other area teams had top finishers at the Dickinson Relays. Three Mt. Pleasant athletes placed in the top 10 in their respective events, including Ella Ensminger, who had a strong day of her own with a throw of 39 feet in the girls shot put to take fourth place.
Two jumpers also took top 10 for the Panthers. Izzy Sloat placed eighth with a jump of 16 feet, 10 inches in the girls long jump and Kayle Brown finished ninth in the boys long jump with a leap of 21 feet, two inches. WACO’s Hayden Shelman bested Brown by one spot with a jump of 21-04.75. Warriors senior Jude Dykstra had a strong performance in the 800- meter race, taking fourth in 2:06.06. Columbus had two top-10 boys finishers in the 60-meter hurdles. Lamar Ceant took fourth at 8.15, while Alex Rees finished in 8.34 to take eighth
