DES MOINES — The spirit of Drake Stadium was at its highest on Saturday, as the state’s wheelchair and ambulatory athletes took center stage. Once again, Southeast Iowa shining, with two in the boys’ wheelchair events and one in the girls’ ambulatory 100-meter dash.
Mid-Prairie’s Jayden Stafford shined in his final weekend at state, picking up second-place finishes in the 100-meters, 200-meters and 400-meters, while taking third in the 800-meters.
It was the last time Stafford would race against Washington’s Josh Anderson in high school competition. Anderson, a junior, was third in the 200 and fourth in the 100, the 400 and the 800.
“I’m sure I’ll see him in the future in college,” Anderson said after their final race. “It’s always great to have great competition out there.”
The area was getting used to having just the two wheelchair competitors going at it, but Pekin’s Tea Orgovanyi made that three when the junior dashed down the backstretch in the 100-meter ambulatory race, finishing third.
“I’m always grateful that there’s new people out here doing the things I love to do,” Anderson said. “And to see there’s no inequalities in sports.”
