Columbus rolls past Lions
An all-around strong performance from the Columbus softball team helped them cruise to a victory over conference foe Lone Tree on Thursday night.
The Wildcats (9-6) used a four-run first inning to claim a 10-3 victory, and have now won two of their last three games.
Kelsey Pretz (9-4) earned the win in the circle, giving up five hits in the game, striking out three.
After a four-run first inning, the Wildcats stayed on the gas, scoring two runs in each of the next two innings to help them pull away.
Laura Mincks helped lead Columbus offensively, scoring three runs on 3-for-4 batting, including a triple and an RBI.
Kelly Roush went 2-for-4 with a homerun, two runs scored and two RBIs, while Shania Boyd went 2-for-3 with a run.
Pretz also added to the offensive end, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
The Wildcats will take on New London at home on Friday with varsity scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
IMS falls to Mepo
The Iowa Mennonite softball team held a lead going into the fourth inning, but Mediapolis quickly erased that on Thursday night.
After a three-run third inning, IMS found itself on top of Mediapolis 3-2, but the Bullees responded with strong sixth and seventh innings to put them back in front, and eventually took the victory 14-5.
IMS falls to 1-14 on the season, and will take on Central Lee on Saturday.
Columbus baseball falls to Lions
Despite a five-run third inning, the Columbus baseball team couldn?t find the win column on Thursday night.
The big inning started with a leadoff walk for Trace Taylor, as the first four Wildcat batters reached base.
All four of those batters scored, as Abel Mena drove two in on an error, and Broderick Wittman doubled in a pair of runs.
Lone Tree had their big innings in the first and second innings, scoring 13 runs to open the game.
Lone Tree won the game 19-5.
Mitchell Griffin led Columbus offensively going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Tommy Pretz and Taylor each had two walks and a run scored in the contest.
Columbus will prepare for a home doubleheader against Louisa-Muscatine on Thursday.
