Area wrestlers compete at Regina Invite

IOWA CITY - Iowa City Regina held their annual invitational on Saturday and plenty of Union Area teams took part. Fairfield, Mt. Pleasant, Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union, Pekin and WACO were all in action.
Columbus/W-MU had the best day of the five, finishing second in the team standings with 113 points. Pekin took fourth with 104 points. WACO tied for fifth, scoring 91 points. Fairfield was eighth, with 74 points, and Mt. Pleasant finished 12th, with 37.
Columbus/W-MU had three championships en route to their second place finish. Lane Scorpil won at 106 lbs., Cameron Rice took first at 152 lbs., and Noah Freeman won the 170 lbs. bracket.
Scorpil had two pins in two matches to earn his championship. He pinned Tristin Sorgenfrey of Tipton and Ayden Nicklaus of Davenport West, both in the second period, to stay unbeaten on the year and walk out with the bracket.
Cameron Rice cruised through his brackt as well. Rice had two pins in three matches. he pinned Regina's Eligah Fegel in the first round and Pekin's Cael Baker in the finals, ending both matches in less than a minute. Sandwiched in between was a semifinal win over Fairfield's Peyton Cline, beating him with an 8-0 major decision.
Noah Freeman had two pins en route to his title. He pinned Danny Gavin of Regina in the first period of the quarterfinal round. Then, after beating Davenport West's Dylan Tomlinson 2-0 in the semifinals, Freeman closed the day out with a first-period pinfall against Blake Juhl of Pekin.
Pekin had two individual championships as well. Michael Jones took the top spot at 138 lbs., and Mason Juhl won the 220 lbs. bracket.
Jones had two pins on his way to the top of the bracket. After a quarterfinal bye, Jones pinned Regina's Sam Aitchison in 1:15 to make the finals and then took first with a pin against Marcus Kolesar of H-L-V with just 15 seconds left in the match.
Juhl had a quarterfinal bye as well, and then won two matches by pinfall. He pinned Dalyn Pederson of West Branch in just 10 seconds in the semifinals, and then pinned Clayton Broderson of Davenport West in 2:53.
WACO had a couple of first place finishes as well. Jalen Colling sook the 126 lbs. bracket and Jaden Williams won the title at 160 lbs.
Collins won his first match over WACO's Junior Quiroz when Quiroz couldn't continue during injury. He took down H-L-V's Ethan Kupka on a 14-4 major decision in the semifinal round, and then beat Sigourney's Mason Dye 12-10 in a shootout of a final match.
After a quarterfinal bye, Williams pinned Sigourney's Nate Schuster in 42 seconds to advance to the final. Williams moved on to beat Tipton's Skyler Schmidt on an 11-3 major decision to walk away with the championship.
Fairfield didn't pick up any wins but they ended the day with two second-place finishes. Zach Westercamp took the silver at 113 lbs., getting two pins on the night. Jonah Cooper took second at 120 lbs., picking up a pair of pins of his own.
Mt. Pleasant only brought two wrestlers to the tournament, but one took home a title. Carson Coleman won the 120 lbs. bracket, picking up pins over Columbus/W-MU's Brody Barton and West Branch's Quinn Hayden before defeating Cooper on an 11-6 decision in the finals.
Mt. Pleasant's only other wrestler was Samuel Carrasco. He went 2-2 on the day and picked up two pins en route to a fourth-place finish at 220 lbs.
