Area wrestlers compete at Tri-County/EV tourney
Cardinal leads Union area with 5th-place finish

THORNBURG — Three Union area schools traveled to the Tri-County/English Valleys wrestling tournament on Saturday. Cardinal, Van Buren County and WACO were all in action in a 10-team meet.
Cardinal had the best day of any of the three, scoring 100.5 points for fifth place. Van Buren County took eighth, with 48 points, and WACO scored 46 points, for ninth.
The Comets had three second-place finishers on the day. Kyran Spees took second in the 138-pound bracket. Brock Lewman was second in the 165-pound bracket, and Isaac Fox was second at 285.
Cardinal had a pair of third place finishers. Dayton Wood took bronze in the 113-pound bracket, and Braden Ballard was third at 157.
Van Buren County’s best wrestler was Tyler Stoltz. Stoltz finished second in the 144-pound bracket. T.J. Jirak (138) and Maddix Kite (150) were both fourth.
WACO had just one wrestler in the Top-4, but it was a winner at 113 pounds. Gage Samo picked up a pin over Cardinal’s Wood in his first match, and nipped Pleasantville’s Tomy Booth 6-5 in the next round to finish the day 2-0.
