Area wrestlers get 5th, three 6ths

While Washington celebrated a Class 2A state champion in Tristin Westphal-Edwards, four other Demons did not make the medal stand in the Iowa High School Athletic Association state wrestling meet.
Other area wrestlers scored a fifth-place finish and three placed sixth Saturday.
Demons Garrett Ikerd, Walker Ikerd and Dillan Sanders were eliminated Thursday. Logan Escher won his opening match, then was pinned by eventual state champion Julien Broderson of Davenport Assumption Friday. Escher was pinned in his next match in 1 minute, 37 seconds to end his tournament.
In Class 1A, Brady Hahn (36-6) was the only one of four Highland Huskies to survive the first day. He won his second match when the other wrestler was disqualified. He was pinned in 4:34 in his semifinal match by Spencer Griffin of Emmetsburg, who finished second. Hahn was pinned in 3:57 by Duke Kyle of Missouri Valley, who finished fourth. Hahn lost a 7-3 decision in the bout for fifth to place sixth.
Sigourney-Keota's Mason Dye won a 6-3 decision to get to the semifinals, where he dropped an 18-11 decision. He then lost a 13-6 decion and wrestled for fifth, where he won with an 18-2 technical fall in 4:11.
WACO's Jalen Collins won his first match in the consolation bracket, pinning his opponent in 2:21, but lost his next bout by a 9-0 major decision to end his tourney.
In Class 2A, Isaac Boucher of Mid-Prairie was sixth at 195. He was pinned in the bout for fifth place in 1:13. Boucher won three high-scoring matches (11-10, 16-9, and 12-9) before being pinned in 4:46 to put him in the match for fifth.
Jerod Kadel (41-3) of Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union placed sixth at 138. He was pinned in his fifth-place match in 5:22. Kadel scored a 3-1 decision to advance to the semifinal, but dropped a decision, 7-4, to fall into the consolation bracket, where he lost 7-2, then wrestled for fifth.
