Pekin?s King still in contention
DES MOINES ? Pekin senior Aaron King (120) rebounded from a first-round loss to keep his consolation run alive Thursday.
Taylor Hagen of Nodaway Valley beat King 7-0 in the first round, but the senior came back in his consolation match to pin Dylan Dorage in 2:56.
?We couldn?t get it going there in the first match, but you could tell the maturity he had coming into his second match,? said Pekin head coach Al Chapman. ?Our goal for him was always to wrestle on Saturday and we?re right there.?
King now sports a 27-7 record and will face either Valley?s Lincoln Monroe or Charlie Jones of Columbus Catholic today in the consolation bracket?s second round.
King?s state-qualifying teammate, 182-pounder Thomas Slaney, wasn?t as lucky.
Following a 9-6 loss to Maquoketa Valley?s Troy Hunt, the junior was knocked out of the tournament is his first-round consolation match. Slaney was pinned by Ryan Leonard of Midland in 1:27.
According to head coach Al Chapman, Slaney almost avoided the consolation bracket altogether.
Down 5-1 headed into the second period, Slaney scored three escapes but couldn?t climb back from the early four-point deficit.
?He dominated the second and third period of that match,? said Chapman. ?It?s just too bad he didn?t have an extra period because I believe Slaney would?ve won.?
Cardinal?s Cale into consolation
DES MOINES ? Cardinal sophomore Ryan Cale, in his first state appearance, made his way to the second day of the state tournament with a consolation win Thursday.
Cale, at 113 pounds, suffered a 12-2 loss to South Hamilton?s JD Rader to start the day. Cale wasted little time in his first consolation match, pinning Nathan Schmitz of Don Bosco just 38 seconds into the match.
Cale is set to wrestle either Zach Welter of North-Linn or Kyler Kiner of Ogden in a second-round consolation match today.
Also wrestling for Cardinal, senior Andrew Hemm saw his season come to an end with back-to-back losses Thursday.
The 220-pound Comet fell 8-1 to Derrick Miller of West Branch and was edged 5-4 to Dylan Coyle of Central Springs in his consolation match.
Corman stays alive in consolation bracket
DES MOINES ? Van Buren senior Zach Corman kept his hopes of reaching the podium alive with a consolation victory Thursday.
The 195-pounder was pinned by Akron-Westfield?s Chet Willer in 1:30 before pinning John Derry of Panorama in 2:20 during the first round of consolation action.
?His first match, his first time in Wells was tough,? said Van Buren head coach Richard Daugherty. ?Corman wrestled a kid who was physically stronger than him and he?s not used to that.?
Corman now prepares for a second-round consolation match against either Ryan Parmely (47-0) or Zac Schleuger (43-0). The match will be part of session five, which starts at 3:30 p.m. today.
?I feel pretty good about where we?re sitting,? Daugherty added. ?Corman?s next opponent will be reeling from his first loss of the season, and if he keeps his head square he still has a shot at getting on the podium.?
