It was a busy day in area wrestling. Along with the four area wrestlers coming out of Class 2A Sectional 16 at Solon, there were plenty of local athletes advancing in other sectionals.
Fairfield, Mid-Prairie and Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union competed in Class 2A Sectional 15.
Columbus/WMU had three wrestlers advance to districts in Williamsburg next weekend. Lane Scorpil won his bracket at 120 pounds, beating Benton Community’s Jordan Thys on a 21-8 major decision in the championship. Kai Malone, at 220 pounds, and Russel Coil, at 285 pounds, advanced with second-place finishes.
Mid-Prairie sent three on to districts as well, but the Golden Hawks also impressed with two bracket winners. Cael Garvey pinned Jack Geels of Williamsburg in 52 seconds to take the 195-pound championship, and Gannon Callahan beat Columbus/WMU’s Coil on a pin in 2:55 to win at 285.
One other Mid-Prairie wrestler went through. Kaden Meader finished second place at 170 pounds.
Fairfield had two wrestlers get through to districts. At 132 pounds, Cason Miller took first place, beating Crox Shebetka of Mount Vernon 9-5 in the championship match. Zach Westercamp finished second at 126.
In Class 1A Sectional 13 at English Valleys, WACO had three wrestlers move on, all winners.
Gage Samo took first in the 106-pound weight class for the Warriors. Louden Huisenga won the 145-pound bracket, and Jonah Clark won at 220.
Highland sent two wrestlers on out of Class 1A Sectional 13. Easton Schlabaugh won the 113-pound bracket, and Carlos Valenzuela took second at 132.
The majority of the area’s Class 1A teams were in Sigourney, where a boat load of local athletes advanced in Sectional 14.
Sigourney-Keota had nine wrestlers move on to next weekend. Three of those were bracket winners.
Cade Molyneaux picked up a first place finish in the 160-pound weight class. Jack Clarahan took first at 170, and Conner Reed took the top spot at 220.
Second place finishers for the Cobras were Reanah Utterback (106), Austin Gorsh (113), Brady Clark (120), DJ Hammes (132), Evan Dawson (152) and Aidan Schuster (182).
New London sent five through to districts, and all five of those wrestlers won their bracket.
Gage Burden went through for the Tigers at 113 pounds. Marcel Lopez finished first in the 126-pound bracket. Dominic Lopez won the 152-pound bracket. Josh Glendening won at 182 pounds, and Trent Wilkerson topped the field at 195.
Van Buren County had two wrestlers move on. Dirk Boyles won his bracket at 145 pounds, and Brant Tedrow finished second place at 195 pounds.
Cardinal’s lone representative next weekend will be 285-pounder Isaac Cox. The Comet heavyweight finished second in the weight class.
Pekin’s Blake Juhl will represent his school at districts. The Panthers’ 170-pounder finished second.
All of the area’s Class 2A wrestlers will compete in District 8 at Williamsburg. The area’s Class 1A wrestlers will all be at District 7 in Wapello. Both of those meets on Saturday will begin at 11 a.m.
