Week 4 of Iowa high school football is here. Among the key games this week on the small school slate, Mid-Prairie opens the district at West Burlington and Pekin and Columbus do battle.
Mid-Prairie (0-3) at West Burlington (3-0)
The Golden Hawks may be 0-3, but all three of those games were by less than 10 points. Mid-Prairie looks to get on the winning side with a road game at West Burlington, a team that averages over 35 points per game.
Mid-Prairie will look to slow down Quincy Collins, who has found the end zone eight times already for the Falcons.
Cardinal (0-3) at Sigourney-Keota (2-1)
Cardinal has struggled to score so far this season, and the road isn’t getting any easier. Sigourney-Keota has won two-straight games, and the Cobras are coming off a big comeback victory at Mid-Prairie last Friday.
Van Buren County (0-3) at Wapello (1-2)
The Warriors hope a road trip to Wapello comes with some offensive luck, as VBC has been shut out in each of its last two games. Wapello had looked like the team to play, giving up 99 points in the first two games of the year before shutting down Louisa-Muscatine last week.
Columbus (1-2) at No. 10 (A) Pekin (3-0)
A Union area clash sees Columbus going into now 10th-ranked Pekin in a key Class A showdown.
The Wildcats have beaten the Panthers three-straight years, averaging over 50 points per game in those wins, but it’s a totally different challenge this fall, as the Panthers have outscored opponents 184-10 this season.
Columbus’ Riley Kaalberg has found the end zone seven times this season, six of which have come on the ground. Meanwhile, Pekin’s Will Adam has just less than 900 all-purpose yards with 12 total touchdowns.
No. 6 (A) Lisbon (3-0) at Highland (2-1)
The Huskies’ defense has given up just 14 total points in a 2-1 start, but the sixth-ranked Lions have been pummeling teams all year long.
Highland’s stout defensive front will look to slow down Lisbon senior Tieman Boots, who has rushed for nine touchdowns this year, as the Lions have outscored opponents 137-6 through their first three games.
WACO (3-1) at HLV (0-4)
WACO comes off a huge win at Winfield-Mount Union, and into HLV territory, as they gear up for a battle of Warriors.
HLV has struggled to keep teams off the scoreboard all season long. The hosting Warriors have given up at least 44 points in every single one of their four previous games.
Montezuma (3-1) at Winfield-Mount Union (2-1)
Winfield-Mount Union lost its first game of the year last week at WACO, but the Wolves can’t let it hurt for long, as they gear up for a key non-district clash with Montezuma.
Jake Edwards looks to keep up his hot streak for the Wolves. He has 12 total touchdowns this year, seven of which have come through the air.
New London (0-3) at Central City (1-3)
New London looks to get its first win of the season against a deceivingly tough Central City team. The Wildcats lost a couple of two-score games against WACO and WMU to start the year, and just came off a 52-50 heartbreaker against Edgewood-Colesburg.
