WAPELLO - Washington had a slow start to a girls basketball game Thursday, trailing 13-5 after a quarter and by as many as 15 before it was 20-11 at halftime. A 22-18 second-half advantage wasn't enough and the Demons lost the nonconference game at Wapello 38-33.
'Wapello sped us up so we rushed our shots,” WHS coach Shannon Rugg said. 'We calmed down in the second half and played better offensively. I thought our effort to play good defense kept us in the game.”
The defense gave the Demons a chance to win, closing to within two points with 1 minute, 30 seconds to go. Washington outscored Wapello from the field but the home team's edge on free throws was the difference.
Kaylin Long, who had five rebounds, and Greta Rothe each scored eight points while Josie Tanner and Makenna Conrad had six points and five rebounds apiece. Rothe snagged seven steals and three rebounds.
'Kaylin did a good job of attacking the basket and getting to the free-throw line,” Rugg said. 'This group of girls push each other so hard in practice that good things will happen if they keep it up.”
Washington plays tonight hosting Centerville.
