The 2023-24 Southeast Conference girls basketball season is nearly halfway over, as all six teams in the league have played four of their scheduled 10 conference games. At winter break, the conference outlook is starting to clear up.
Unfortunately for the trio of Union area teams in the SEC, the Lee County teams and Burlington occupy the Top-3 spots. Washington, Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant bring up the rear after four games.
The Demons are 2-2 in the conference, squeaking out a 43-40 win at Fairfield and beating Mt. Pleasant 66-60 at home. Washington nearly had a third win in Fort Madison, but the Bloodhounds got away with a 56-49 victory in the last SEC battle of 2023.
Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant have had a tough time getting wins in general, as both the Trojans and Panthers come into 2024 with one non-conference win.
Fairfield led Washington at the end of each of the first three quarters when the Trojans hosted the Demons on Dec. 8. Washington outscored Fairfield 17-9 in the final eight minutes.
Mt. Pleasant had a great first half at Burlington on Dec. 1. The Panthers led the Grayhounds 20-17 at the halftime break, and were still very much in the contest after three quarters, trailing 35-31.
Burlington ran away in the fourth quarter to escape 62-38.
Either Mt. Pleasant and Fairfield will pick up a conference victory on Jan. 5, when the SEC schedule resumes. The Panthers will host the Trojans in their first battle of the season.
Washington will be back at home on Jan. 5. The Demons host will host a Burlington squad that sits tied for second in the league standings.
