WASHINGTON — Case Field in Washington was filled with area track and field fans as the 2022 Steve Roth Relays gave the spring sports season a jump start on Friday night.
Among the squads in attendance were eight Union Area teams. Each one of them scooped up at least one win in their respective classes.
Hosting Washington was joined by Mt. Pleasant in Class A. The Demons had three wins on the day, and the Panthers picked up two.
Washington’s Elijah Morris was a double-winner. Morris bested the field in the 400-meter dash, and then took the 200-meter dash later in the night to earn the Demons 20 points in two events.
Washington’s Lance Sobaski pulled away from the rest of the field in the 3200-meter run. He was the highest finisher of any class to earn the Demons another win.
Like Sobaski, Mt. Pleasant’s Will Davidson had the best mark of any class with his victory. Davidson had the Panthers’ only win, taking the long jump.
Fairfield was in Class B, and River Patterson earned the Trojans 10 points in the 400-meter dash. Patterson finished just behind Morris in his heat, but was the top runner in Class B.
Mid-Prairie had a strong night in Class B, taking six events. Cain Brown led the way for the Golden Hawks, taking both the long jump and the 110-meter hurdles.
Carter Harmsen had an individual win for the Golden Hawks, taking the discus throw. Thaddeus Shetler won the 1600-meter run.
Mid-Prairie had a pair of relay wins. The shuttle hurdle team of Justice Jones, Kaden Meader, Brown and Micah Hostetler won, as did the distance medley team of Jackson Gehmen, Harmsen, Will Cavanaugh and Shetler.
WACO had four wins in Class C, two of which came from Braden Spain. Spain won the Class C high jump and the 400-meter dash.
WACO’s shuttle hurdle team of Isaac Oswald, Zach Schmitz, Maosn Miller and Simeon Reichenbach took the Class C shuttle hurdle relay. Reichenbach also took home the top spot in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Columbus had three wins in Class C, including two by Kaden Amigon, who won the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dahs. Isaac Acosta picked up 10 more points for the Wildcats with a win in the 1600.
Winfield-Mount Union had three Class C wins as well. Cam Buffington won the long jump. Gabriel Hemsworth took the 400-meter hurdles, and the distance medley squad of Caleb Giese, Buffington, Hemsworth and Kohlby Newsom gave the Wolves one relay win.
Highland had just one Class C victory. Devin Lovetinsky won the shot put.
