Behind a three event sweep from senior Wes Atkinson, the Winfield-Mt. Union boys' track team wrapped up a fourth place team finish at the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division meet on Monday, May 9.
Atkinson ran the first leg of a winning shuttle hurdle team before sweeping the 110 meter high hurdles (14.73 seconds) and the 400 meter low hurdles (57.56). Atkinson, along with Grant Edwards, Andrew Liles and Trent Haines, edged out WACO by .45 in the shuttle hurdle (1:02.15) for the win.
"Wes had a great night in the hurdles for us with three wins. You have to give some credit to those other guys in that shuttle too. That was a great race to watch and a pretty good time for only having ran it once or twice," said coach Cody Wolfe.
Andrew Liles took second in the 1,600 meter run, with a time of 4:52.54, while Trent Haines finished runner-up to Atkinson in the 110 highs (16.11). Atkinson also took second in the long jump with a distance of 20'.
Edwards, Max Fricke, Derek Dedic and Liles finished fifth in the sprint medley with a time of 4:02.94, while Skyler Davis and Clayton Robison finished sixth (109'-11") and seventh (107'-3"), respectively, in the discus.
"I think overall we showed where we are as a team. Some of our older kids, Wes, Trent, Liles, Grant, really stepped up and did a nice job in things and looked great. We also showed our youth in a lot of the events where we weren't so strong," said Wolfe.
W-MU runs again tomorrow at the district meet in Wayland, starting at 4 p.m.
