ANAMOSA — Champions do not allow an opening for an opponent.
Mid-Prairie displayed championship mettle in winning the River Valley Conference girls track title Thursday, scoring in 18 of 19 events with a top-five placing in 16 and seven wins that included a new league record.
Mid-Prairie’s boys were fifth with two wins — Cain Brown’s high jump of 6 feet and the shuttle hurdle relay edged Tipton by five/100ths of a second in 1 minute, 5.41 seconds behind Clark Latcham, who was second in both the 110 high hurdles (15.94) and the 400 hurdles (57.44).
The Golden Hawks’ depth carried them to the girls title. The sprint medley relay ran the second fastest time in Class 2A this season and lost. Two relays won: the 4x200 and the distance medley, which cleared second place by 10 seconds with the fastest 2A time.
Two of the four field events were Hawk wins: Tori Boyse put the shot 38 feet, 7 inches and Ella Groenewold leapt 5 feet high.
Danielle Hostetler’s 3000 run of 10:26.4 is now the RVC record in the race. Mitzi Evans won the 800 in 2:22.64, the fourth fastest time in 2A. She recorded the fastest time at the Drake Relays. Sydney Yoder’s first-place time of 5:04.41 in the 1500 is 2A’s third fastest this season.
