RIVERSIDE — In a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division baseball game suspended in the fourth inning last week and resumed Wednesday, Highland got the 11-10 win over Pekin when Bryce Thompson scored on Trevor McFarland’s safety squeeze bunt.
“Playing Pekin is always tough and it’s really tough when you’re finishing a game that you are ahead 9-4,” Highland’s Seth Milledge said. “Thompson made a great slide away from the tag.”
That was the score when the game was suspended. Pekin scored two in the sixth and four in the seventh inning to take the lead. Brady Latcham and Blake Juhl each went 2-for-4 and Juhl batted in three Panthers runs. Latcham and Cael Baker had two RBIs. Latcham took the loss.
Chase Schultz got the win with the last two outs. Ethan Paisley threw five innings with 11 strikeouts, three walks and seven hits.
McFarland went 3-for-4 with four RBIs while Logan Bonebrake had three RBIs, going 2-for-4. Luke Miller was 2-for-3 with a double.
“When my team seems to face a do-or-die situation they go out and do it,” Milledge said. "Our kids have battled back a lot this year.“
Cardinal clipped
BURLINGTON — Cardinal lost a South Division game 5-3 to Notre Dame.
Losing pitcher Dawson Lewis gave up six hits in six innings with three strikeouts. Lewis helped his cause by batting in two runs.
Blaine Bryant had two doubles for Cardinal while Landon Becker, Figueroa and Lewis each had a hit.
Wolves falter
WEST BURLINGTON — Winfield-Mount Union’s Jacob Ford went 3-for-4 in a 5-1 loss to West Burlington. Nick Crow gave up seven hits, but no walks with two Ks in four and a third innings. Ford threw the last five outs with no walks, no hits and two Ks.
