KALONA — There was little sound from either team’s bats Monday in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division baseball game and a lot of yelling from the home plate umpire. The ump was calling strikes and sat down 16 batters on punchouts while there were just two hits in the game.
Hillcrest had both hits and 12 of the 16 strikeouts. Hillcrest’s Noah Miller was not allowing any hits in a 3-0 win for the Ravens. Miller pitched six innings, hit a batter and walked five with 10 strikeouts. Luke Schrock added two more punchouts in his inning of work without a hit.
The combined no-hitter was Miller’s first win this season. He got run support from London Schrock’s triple and Seth Ours’ single as those were the only two hits for the Ravens. Eli Ours had an RBI. The Ravens scored twice in the first inning and added insurance in the fourth.
Hillcrest has an overall record of 8-6 and a North record of 6-4 while Wapello is 7-10, 5-4.
Greiner home run helps Eagles fly
MARENGO — Bryce Greiner’s home run along with Carson Sprouse and Patrick Clarahan going 3-for-4- propelled Keota to a 11-0 road South Iowa Cedar League win over Iowa Valley.
Four runs in the seventh inning capped the Eagles offense. Sam Sieren, Brady Duwa and Colten Clarahan each had two hits in the game.
Sprouse’s five-hit, no-walk, nine-strikeout pitching over almost a complete six innings was capped by Luke Hammen’s two strikeouts and a hit pitching over an inning and a third.
Keota’s record is 11-6, 9-5 in the SICL and Iowa Valley is 3-12, 3-10. LS (14-9) and Sigourney (14-4) 11-3, North Mahaska (14-5) 10-4, HLV 9-6) 8-4
No. 7 Mid-Prairie tames Tigers twice
TIPTON — In River Valley Conference play, the Class 2A No. 7 Golden Hawks swept Tipton 9-1 and 7-2.
Kayden Reinier did not issue a walk as he tossed seven innings for the win with just five hits, striking out seven. Karson Grout, Aidan Rath and Cain Brown cranked out a double each. Vinny Bowlin and Alex Bean had two hits a piece. Brown had five stolen bases, which gives him 22 for the season 14th in Class 2A, but teammate Reinier is fifth with 27.
Grout had a double in the 7-2 win, and Aidan Rath had two. Bowlin had two hits. Three pitchers combined to limit the Tigers to three hits. Grout threw four innings with seven strikeouts, five walks and no hits while Brown went two innings with a walk and a strikeout, and Jake Swartzentruber walked one and hit a batter in his inning of work.
Mid-Prairie is 15-5 overall and the 12-3 RVC South record leads the division while Tipton is 5-18, 4-12. Durant is close to the Hawks at 15-5, 12-4.
Stansberry HR helps Pekin topple Lone Tree
LONE TREE — Chase Stansberry’s home run and six combined Juhl hits led to a Pekin win. After giving up six runs in the bottom of the third inning to trail 7-3, Pekin scored six in the top of the fifth on the way to a 11-9 win in the North Division.
Mason Juhl went 3-for-5 with a double and batted in three Panthers while Blake Juhl was 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Brady Millikin got the win with three strikeouts, a walk and five hits in three and two/thirds innings on the mound.
