PELLA - Cardinal's Landon Becker made the Pella Christian Eagles' baseball team lay an egg in Saturday's Class 2A Substate 6 opener - a goose egg.
The Comet sophomore shut the Eagles down, throwing a complete game one-hitter. He struck out five and walked to en route to a 2-0 postseason victory, one that advanced the Comets onto Tuesday night's substate quarterfinals.
Cardinal scored its only runs of the game in the first inning. Dawson Lewis hit an RBI triple to give Cardinal a 1-0 lead, and scampered home for the second, and last, run of the night.
Becker helped himself at the plate, going 2-for-4 to lead the Cardinal offense. He scored one run on Lewis' first-inning triple.
Maddux Jones finished the night 1-for-1 with a single, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Bryant finished 1-for-4.
The Comets have now won seven games in a row. They'll be in Eddyville on Tuesday night to take on Davis County.
