Big school athletes compete at Drake
Washington’s Anderson, Fairfield’s Giberson bring home Top-6 finishes

DES MOINES — The Union area’s big schools had a handful of athletes competing at the 2024 Drake Relays over the weekend.
The Union coverage area had three Top-10 finishes on the day, and four in the Top-15. Each of the three big schools had at least one Top-15 result.
The best finish of the weekend went to Washington’s Josh Anderson, who took fourth place in the boys’ 400-meter wheelchair event, crossing the line in 64.31 seconds.
The Washington boys were also represented by Micah Rees in the 3200. Rees took 17th. The Demon boys had a 72nd-place finish from the 4X100 team of Keider Gomez Valdez, Kael Williams, Jayfred Espinosa and Alec Ulin.
The Washington girls had one qualifying relay. The 4X100 team of Ada Kendall, Leighton Messinger, Leighton Salazar and Jaedyn oore took 36th.
Fairfield’s Ryan Giberson and Eli Zillman each cleared 6 foot, 3 inches in the high jump Giberson finished sixth and Zillman took ninth to give the Trojan boys’ track team two Top-10 finishes.
Mt. Pleasant saw all three of its qualifying events land in the Top-20, led by the 4X100 team of Kynlee White, Alex Scott, Bailey Jalas and Andi Scott, which just missed out on the finals by five spots, finishing 13th overall with the time of 49.72 seconds.
Mt. Pleasant’s girls’ 4X200 quartet of Sanders, White, Scott and Scott finished 19th. Avin Truong took 19th for the Panther boys in the long jump competition.
