BURLINGTON — Mt. Pleasant native and Notre Dame-West Burlington wrestler, Blaine Frazier always knew he wanted to wrestle at the collegiate level.
On Wednesday afternoon, that dream became a reality as Frazier signed his National Letter of Intent to wrestle at Indiana University.
Frazier, who was this years Class 2A 132-pound state champion and also helped the Nikes secured the Class 2A state team title, chose Indiana over Coe College.
For Frazier, Indiana’s Kelley School of Business, one of the most prestigious business schools in the country, was the deciding factor.
“The biggest thing is the Kelley Business school,” Frazier said. “It’s top 10 in every single aspect of business. Finance, management and everything. They’re a great business program.”
Frazier was a three-time state finalist. He amassed a 201-11 record over the course of his high school career.
As a senior, he went 53-0 and defeated McKinley Robbins of Greene County, 5-3, for the state title.
Frazier said that his dream was always to win a state title under WB-ND head coach Bill Plein.
“When I started wrestling for Plein, I came in wanting to be a state champion,” he said. “I wanted to be a four-timer. It killed me losing in the finals my freshman year. I knew that I could compete with these kids at the top level. Their not any better than me. It’s all in my head. By the time I was in my senior year, I had all the mental part of the sport down. I had a perfect season. I didn’t get taken down once. I couldn’t ask for anything better.”
While Frazier has learned a lot of valuable lessons during his high school career, nothing is bigger than his belief in himself.
“You always have to take chances,” he said. “You always got to believe in yourself. If your not believing in yourself then your not going to be able to compete at a high level. Just go for it.”
Frazier first started wrestling in the fourth grade while living in Campbellsville, Kentucky. He got the opportunity to learn from the Campbellsville University wrestlers, which gave him a big leap in knowledge of the sport.
Along the way, there has been a plethora of people that have helped him develop his craft, and he loves them for it.
“I love them all,” Frazier said. “They’ve all been with me every since I’v been here in Iowa. Even the coaches in Kentucky helped me out. They helped develop me. Plein’s and Siegel, they’re a huge part of my wrestling career. They developed my whole style.”
As moves onto the next level, Frazier knows that he will have to continue to work.
“I’m going to keep building throughout my entire college career,” Frazier said. “I got to see how the competition is. I wanna say that I wanna be an NCAA champ, a National Champion. That’s always gonna be the goal. I’m always gonna be shooting for that. If I’m not, then I’m not going to be working hard enough to do anything.”
