The recent closure of the swimming area of Waterworks Park has me mystified. Four years ago, my wife?s job brought us to southeast Iowa. Moving from Atlanta, I was convinced we?d find a place to live in Iowa City so as to not give up too many ?city comforts.? To ensure no options were left on the table, we decided to take a look at some of Fairfield?s real estate. In looking at a house tucked back into the actual park, we knew we?d found a home and, more importantly, a neighborhood we could love. The swimming area and beach were a major component to the overall decision to purchase and live in Fairfield.
How we could consider shutting down this draw for our community is extremely disheartening. If it would have happened four years ago, I would have missed out on what?s turned into a great experience with this city?I imagine someone in a similar situation now driving through this beautiful park with an unsightly orange snow fence across the beach area would be less than impressed with the prospect of living in this city.
