WATERLOO — Five area bowlers went into Waterloo this week looking for a state individual bowling title, but the Union area had to settle for just one finalist.
Sigourney-Keota senior Jayden Montgomery was the only area bowler to advance to bracket play, doing it in the Class 1A girls meet on Monday. She finished seventh in pre-bracket play, with a 600, to get into the Top-8. Teammate Sophie Young was 17th, with a 525.
In bracket play, Montgomery fell 249-201 in the quarterfinals against second-seeded Callie Arens of MMCRU. She won her consolation game 197-184 over Kamryn Taylor of Louisa-Muscatine, and dropped a heartbreaker in the fifth-place match, falling 215-213 against Camanche’s Abbi Nylin, to place Montgomery in sixth.
The only other Sigourney-Keota bowler to make it to state was Landyn Greiner, who finished 12th on the boys’ side, rolling a 666. He was 27 pins off a Top-8 finish.
Two Mt. Pleasant girls were representing the Panthers in the individual tournament. Bethany Drury was the top Panther, finishing 21st place. The senior rolled a 534, which put her just under 70 pins away from advancing to bracket play.
Madelynn Millard, a junior, rolled a 454 in her first ever state appearance. She finished the tournament in 30th place.
Keokuk not only won the team competition, but placed three individuals in individual bracket play. The Chiefs’ Sophia Rule, Natalee Alberts and Jaelynn Ketterer were the only Southeast Conference bowlers to make the bracket. Ketterer finished second.
