The Union area small school basketball teams are finally underway. A game-winning shot in Letts highlighted a busy night of area hoops.
Winfield-Mount Union 40, Louisa-Muscatine 38
Max Edwards was held scoreless by the L&M defense until the final 10 seconds of the game, when his game-winning jumper sunk the Falcons in Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division action.
Edwards hit the game-winning shot with eight seconds left. Older brother Jake Edwards had tied the game up at 38-38 with a 3-pointer on the previous possession. He finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds and five steals.
Hillcrest Academy 78, Highland 39
The Ravens were all over Highland in SEISC North play. hillcrest led 20-10 after one quarter, 41-21 at halftime and 61-30 after three.
Highland didn’t have a player in double digits. Logan McFarland, Louis Horak and Bryce Hazelett all scored eight.
Pekin 72, Wapello 42
Pekin thrashed Wapello in SEISC North play to start the season off strong.
The Panthers led 23-9 after one quarter, 41-19 at halftime and 56-33 after three periods.
Lone Tree 72, Columbus 46
The Wildcats couldn’t figure out a tough Lone Tree squad, going down 39-15 by halftime and 64-28 after three quarters.
The Wildcats outscored the Lions 18-8 in the fourth, but it was too little, too late.
Holy Trinity Catholic 57, WACO 35 (Monday)
The Warriors were done in by the hosting Crusaders in a SEISC crossover game.
Holy Trinity led 14-10 after one quarter, 29-15 at halftime and 44-22 after three periods.
West Burlington 97, New London 42
West Burlington proved to be a tough out yet again, as stars Mason Watkins and Quincy Collins combined for 53 points to do in the Tigers.
New London trailed 25-10 after one quarter, 55-23 at halftime and 86-35 after three periods.
Van Buren County 74, Cardinal 53 (Monday)
The Warriors were all over the Comets in a non-conference game, beating their neighborly rivals by 21 points.
VBC’s Izaak Loeffler went off for 27 points in the win. Will Cocherell had 18, and Kamden Nusbaum finished with 10.
Keota 84, Louisa-Muscatine 46 (Monday)
The Eagles dropped the Falcons by 38 points in their first game of the season.
Keota’s Billie Kindred hit seven 3-pointers and scored 32 points in the opener. Chase Haifley went for 18 points, and Jace Chalupa scored 16.
Keota 63, Sigourney 55
One night later, Kindred dropped 22 points and Haifley put up 21 as Keota beat the rival Savages in a tight South Iowa Cedar League clash.
The Eagles led by just five points going into the fourth quarter but put up a game-high 20 in the fourth.
Mid-Prairie 63, Benton 43
It was all Mid-Prairie on Tuesday night in Benton, as the Golden Hawks rocked the Bobcats by 20 points.
Ace peck scored 23 points in the win. Bryce Henry had 15 points, and Brooks Weber put in 12 off the bench.
