Boys basketball roundup: Keota, VBC taste victory
Keota, Cardinal, Van Buren County and WACO begin seasons

The 2023-24 basketball season got underway on Monday night for a quarter of Union area teams.
Keota, Cardinal, WACO and Van Buren County were all in action as Keota took on Louisa-Muscatine, while Cardinal and Van Buren County faced one another and WACO took on Holy Trinity Catholic.
The Eagles put together a dominant performance in their first game of the season, thrashing Louisa-Muscatine 84-59.
Keota outscored the Falcons 26-10 in the first, tied in the second 21-21, won the third 25-16 and then were equal in the fourth at 12-12.
Billie Kindred scored 22 points and pulled down 11 boards to lead the Eagles. Sawyer Stout followed with 18 points and Cole Kindred had 17 points and six rebounds. Evan Vittetoe ended with eight points and Tanner Waterhouse had seven.
Van Buren County and Cardinal went down to the wire on Monday night as one point is all that separated the two teams at the final whistle.
VBC picked up the victory after edging the Comets 62-61.
WACO suffered defeat on the night as the Warriors narrowly fell to Holy Trinity Catholic.
The Warriors led for the majority of the game, leading 12-10 after the first, 29-23 at the half and 37-35 heading into the fourth.
But the difference maker came in the fourth as the Crusaders outscored the Warriors 24-13 in the quarter.
In all, Holy Trinity outscored WACO 36-21 in the second half.
Hunter Hughes led WACO with 21 points, seven assists and four rebounds. Colton Leichty finished with 15 points and 10 boards. Chase Waterhouse followed with seven points and eight rebounds. Reece Oswald had three points, while Clayton Miller and Isaac Rich both had two.
