Boys basketball roundup: No. 6 WMU continues to roll

No. 6 Winfield-Mt. Union 68, Lone Tree 31
Winfield-Mt. Union had no issues with Lone Tree on Friday night. The No. 6 (Class 1A) Wolves blitzed the Lions in the first quarter, taking a 21-7 lead.
Lone Tree was more competitive in the second, but the Wolves took the quarter 15-12 to make it 36-19 at the break. WMU extended its lead in the third, putting together its most dominant frame of the night. The Wolves outscored the Lions 23-5 in the quarter to take a 59-24 advantage into the fourth. WMU closed with a 9-7 quarter to seal it.
Cam Buffington led the way scoring 20 points with five rebounds. Jake Edwards followed with 14 points. Abram Edwards notched himself a double-double scoring 13 points and pulling down 18 boards.
WMU still holds a firm lead on the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North standings. They’re now 10-1 on the season and 9-0 in conference play.
Hillcrest Academy 64, Columbus 19
Hillcrest Academy put together one of its most dominant performances of the season on Friday night against Columbus.
The Ravens scored 45 points in the first two periods, while holding the Wildcats to just nine. Things continued into the third as the Ravens went on to top the Wildcats 16-7 for a 61-16 lead. That would be more than enough as both teams scored just three points in the fourth.
Seth Ours finished with 22 points for the Ravens. Bryce Bailey followed with 15 points and Mason Bender had 12.
Ellis Hills-Carrier ended with 12 for Columbus. Elliot Wessley had five and Juan Chairez two.
No. 7 Keota 70, Colfax-Mingo 44
Keota stays perfect after its big win over Colfax-Mingo on Friday.
The Eagles outscored the Tigerhawks 24-8, 14-7 and 18-10 in the first three quarters to make it 56-25. Colfax-Mingo would take the fourth 19-14, but it would make no difference.
Sawyer Stout tallied 17 points for the Eagles. Tanner Waterhouse ended with 13 points and Cole Kindred 11.
WACO 53, Pekin 31
WACO held Pekin to single digits in each of the first two quarter on Friday and the Warriors never looked back.
The Warriors led 32-14 at the half. Pekin bounced back with a 11-7 third, but the WACO lead was too great and it closed with a 14-6 frame.
Hunter Hughes notched a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds for WACO. Colton Leichty ended with 11 points and five boards. Isaac Rich finished with eight points.
Burlington Notre Dame 83, New London 51
Notre Dame was just too much for New London on Friday in the two’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference South battle.
London Franklin finished with 21 points and seven rebounds for New London. Brendan Richey carded 16 points and Brigham Porter ended with six points.
Clarke 90, Cardinal 35
Cardinal had a tough go against Clarke on Friday evening. The Comets scored 22 points in the first half, but the Indians dropped in 47 points themselves. It only got worse from there for Cardinal as Clarke took the third period 30-4 to make it 77-26 after 24 minutes of action.
Clarke went on to take the fourth 13-9. The Indian’s Jack Cooley was a thorn in the side of the Comets as he scored a whopping 50 points.
Mediapolis 78, Van Buren County 23
Van Buren County was held to single digits in each of the four quarters on Friday night.
The Warriors were outscored 21-9, 29-3, 19-7 and 9-4 in those eight minute frames.
West Liberty 52, Hillcrest Academy 50
Hillcrest Academy trailed West Liberty 40-34 heading into the fourth quarter on Saturday, but the Ravens never gave up.
The Ravens battled back and had a chance to win it and in fact hit the shot to win at the buzzer, but the shot was waived off as West Liberty escaped with the win.
