Boys basketball roundup: WMU slips past WACO

Winfield-Mount Union’s rivalry win at WACO highlighted a busy night of area small schoolboys basketball.
Winfield-Mount Union 46, WACO 30
Wifnield-Mount Union held WACO to just five points each in the first two quarters and rode the wave to a rivalry victory.
Cam Buffington made his season debut and knotched 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Carter Loyd had nine points. Gabriel Hemsworth had eight, and Abram Edwards had six points and 11 rebounds.
Hunter Hughes paced WACO with 12 points. Colton Leichty finished with six points and Isaac Rich had five.
Hillcrest Academy 75, Lone Tree 57
The Ravens put up 75 points in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division road win.
The game was just a 49-42 Hillcrest advantage after three quarters, but the Ravens scored 26 points in the fourth to run away with the game.
Hillcrest’s win put the Ravnes at 4-0 this season. Hillcrest and WMU are the only two unbeaten teams in SEISC North play, sitting at 2-0 and 3-0 respectively.
Pekin 67, Columbus 28
The Panthers put up 32 points in the first quarter en orute to an SEISC North victory against Columbus, moving to 2-1 and dropping Columbus to 0-4 in the process.
Pekin led 49-14 at halftime and 62-25 after the third quarter.
Louisa-Muscatine 67, Highland 41
The Huskies had trouble containing Louisa-Muscatine star Ty Northup, who put up 36 points in an SEISC North victory over Highland.
Highland trailed 20-11 after one quarter, 41-21 at the half and 58-32 after three periods.
Danville 64, New London 63
New London suffered heartbreak in a home loss to Danville, falling to its rival by just one point.
The Tigers lost on a pair of free throws in the final 30 seconds. It was the first time New London lost to Danville since the 2019 season.
Brigham Porter led the Tigers with 21 points in the loss. Brendan Richey scored 16.
West Burlington 70, Van Buren County 36
The Falcons were too much for the Warriors in an SEISC South road game.
Despite the loss, Lucas Fett went for 12 points on the night. Lincoln Bainbridge ended with seven.
Keota 89, English Valleys 29
Keota stayed red-hot, blasting the Bears by 60 points in a South Iowa Cedar League East Division route.
Keota’s Sawyer Stout finished the night with 31 points. Cole Kindred scored 14 points and dished out seven assists, and Billie Kindred ended the night with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Keota is now 5-0 on the season.
Mid-Prairie 69, West Liberty 51
The Golden Hawks used a dominant second half to blow past West Liberty in a River Valley South battle.
Mid-Prairie only led 23-12 at the break, but the Golden Hawks put up 24 points in the third quarter and 22 in the fourth to run away with the game.
