Boys basketball roundup: WMU wins fourth straight

Winfield-Mt. Union (6-1) 65, Columbus (1-6) 22
Winfield-Mt. Union made it four wins in a row on Friday with a victory over Columbus.
WMU held the Wildcats to just 10 points in the first half, all those points came in the first quarter. Meanwhile, the Wolves went on to score 40. In the second, WMU only extended its lead in the second half, edging Columbus 25-12.
Abram Edwards finished with a double double for WMU, notching 21 points and 11 rebounds. Cam Buffington ended with a double double as well with 12 points and 10 boards. Jake Edwards followed with 12 points.
Columbus was led by Gabriel Zuniga, who finished with eight points. Tim Hills-Carrier had five points as well as eight rebounds. Ryan Coil scored five too.
Keota (8-0) 59, Lynnville-Sully (6-1) 56
Keota downs another unbeaten opponent to stay perfect on the season. The Eagles led after each of the first three quarters, 17-7, 25-18 and 43-39.
The Eagles were able to hang on despite a rally by the Hawks late.
Cole Kindred led the way with 17 points and six assists. Evan Vittetoe tallied 16 points on 8-for-9 shooting. Sawyer Stout notched 10 points.
Winfield-Mt. Union (7-1) 55, Holy Trinity Catholic (5-3) 40
Winfield-Mt. Union continues to roll with a win over Holy Trinity Catholic on Saturday.
The Wolves led by just two at the half, 23-21, but went on to outscore the Crusaders 32-19 in the second half.
Cam Buffington finished with 20 points and eight rebounds in the win. Abram Edwards tallied 13 points and nine rebounds. Carter Loyd carded 12 points and five assists.
WACO (4-2) 59, Hillcrest Academy (6-2) 38
WACO took sole possession of second place in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North with the win over Hillcrest Academy on Friday night.
The Warriors led 15-8 after one, 36-19 at the half and 51-30 after three on their way to the win.
Hunter Hughes led WACO with 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Colton Leichty finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Chase Waterhouse added 12 points, along with 10 rebounds.
Mason Bender finished with 12 points, six rebounds and five assists to lead Hillcrest Academy. Rowan Miller followed with eight points and four assists. Seth Ours ended with seven points.
Mid-Prairie (4-3) 81, Durant (0-8) 43
Mid-Prairie had no problem with Durant on Friday night.
The Golden Hawks led 25-15 after one and went on to outscore the Wildcats 56-22 the rest of the way.
Ace Peck led Mid-Prairie with 20 points. Bryce Henry finished with 16 points and nine rebounds. Landon Sullivan notched 12 points.
New London (2-5) 60, GMG (3-5) 59
New London picked up win number two on Saturday in a nail-bitter against GMG.
New London led 17-9 after the first and 33-28 at the break. GMG slimmed the Tigers lead to just three, 49-46, after three, but the Tigers were able to get the one point win in the fourth.
Brendan Richey finished with 21 points on seven threes for New London. Brigham Porter followed with 16 points and 11 rebounds. London Franklin added 11 points.
Pekin (5-4) 64, Lone Tree (4-5) 63
Pekin just got by Lone Tree on Friday. The Panthers led 28-27 at the half and the two teams were tied heading into the fourth 44-44. Pekin went on to edge the Lions in the fourth 20-19.
Highland (1-6) 49, English Valleys (1-7) 46
Highland picked up its first victory of the season on Saturday against English Valleys.
Holy Trinity Catholic (5-2) 65, Van Buren County (1-6) 33
A tough start plagued VBC on Friday. The Warriors scored just five points through the opening two quarters against HTC.
The Warriors were down 51-5 at the half. They went on to outscore the Crusaders 28-14 in the second half, but the deficit was too great.
Izaak Loeffler had 17 points and five rebounds for VBC. Kamden Nusbaum and Lucas Fett both ended with five points.
Wapello (2-5) 38, Highland (0-6) 30
Highland came up just short to Wapello on Friday. The Huskies trailed just 21-16 at the half, but the two squads were nearly dead even in the second half with the Indians having the edge 17-14.
West Burlington (7-0) 73, New London (1-5) 31
West Burlington was just too much for New London on Friday night. The Falcons scored 44 points through two quarters, while holding the Tigers to just 19.
West Burlington went on to lead 70-26 after the third and New London couldn’t make up the difference.
Brigham Porter and Brendan Richey both finished with nine points. London Franklin followed with eight points and 10 rebounds.
