A full weekend of boys basketball action saw Hillcrest Academy pull out a thrilling overtime win over Pekin and New London beat Danville at the buzzer to stay undefeated.
Mid-Prairie 54, Cascade 42 (Thursday)
The Golden Hawks held off Cascade for a River Valley North win despite the Cougars sinking eight 3-pointers to make it a game. Mid-Prairie is now 5-0 to star the season.
Mid-Prairie’s Carter Harmsen scored 21 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Alex Bean scored 13.
Lynnville-Sully 57, Keota 37
Keota couldn’t get much going in a South Iowa Cedar League crossover loss at Lynnville-Sully.
The Eagles had a balanced scoring effort, led by Cole Kindred’s nine points. Sawyer Stout scored eight points, and Aidan Anderson finished with seven.
Winfield-Mount Union 58, Wapello 32
It was all Wolves in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division matchup in Winfield. WMU stayed atop the division behind a 26-point night from Cam Buffington.
Abram Edwards scored 10 points for the Wolves. Konner Wade knocked down a trifecta of 3-pointers, for nine.
Hillcrest Academy 60, Pekin 59 (OT)
Grant Bender scored 26 points, including the game-winner in overtime, and added 11 rebounds as Hillcrest Academy survived its trip to Pekin by one point.
Pekin’s Chandler Stull tied the game on a buzzer-beater 3-pointer to send the game into overtime at 53-53, but the Ravens had just enough at the end.
Luke Schrock and Seth Ours each chipped in 12 points for the Ravens.
Columbus 56, Highland 42
Columbus led by as much as 18 in a SEISC North game at Highland. The Wildcats won their second game and the Huskies remained winless.
West Liberty 70, Columbus 42
West Liberty won every quarter to knock off Columbus one night after the Wildcats’ conference win at Highland. Columbus fell to 2-5 overall with the loss.
New London 55, Danville 54
Torren Riley hit a game-winning midrange shot for the Tigers in a battle of unbeaten SEISC South teams at Danville. That capped off a fourth-quarter comeback that put the Tigers atop the division alone.
Blaise Porter scored 25 points to lead New London to victory. Kade Benjamin finished the night with 15. Camden Kasel had six, and Riley finished with five.
West Burlington 63, WACO 49
A cold fourth quarter doomed WACO in a SEISC South road game at West Burlington, leading to the Warriors’ second loss of the season.
Mason Miller scored 13 points to lead WACO. Colton Leichty finished with 12.
WACO 49, Winfield-Mount Union 41 (Saturday)
WACO defeated WMU in a rivalry showdown on Saturday. Full results will be in Tuesday’s edition of The Union.
Cardinal 61, Van Buren County 45
Van Buren County led rival Cardinal 19-5 after one quarter, but the Comets stormed back to secure a SEISC South victory on the road.
Dawson Lewis scored 19 points to lead the Comets. Jackson Manning had 16 for the Warriors.
No. 1 (1A) Grand View Christian 82, Cardinal 39 (Thursday)
One day before Cardinal’s win at Van Buren County, the top team in Class 1A came in to Eldon and handed the Comets a non-conference defeat.
The unbeaten Grand View squad led 15-7 after the first quarter, 37-16 at halftime and 57-34 after three periods.
