Boys roundup: New London, Pekin show out
Numerous area boys’ teams saw success on Tuesday Jan. 18

No. 7 (1A) New London 67, Cardinal 55
New London stays undefeated with the win over Cardinal, improving to 10-0 on the year.
Kade Benjamin led the Tigers with 20 points, eight rebounds, four assists and six steals. Blaise Porter finished with 17 points and five assists. Kooper Schulte scored 12 and grabbed nine rebounds.
Cardinal slips to 8-5.
No. 6 (2A) Mid-Prairie 71, Tipton 36
The Golden Hawks cruised to victory Tuesday night against Tipton to stay undefeated.
After a dominating, 39-22, first half Mid-Prairie followed it up with an excellent second. The Golden Hawks held the Tigers to 14 points while scoring 32.
Carter Harmsen poured in 31 points, while pulling down seven rebounds. Alex Bean finished with 14 points and seven assists.
Mid-Prairie improves to 13-0.
Winfield-Mt. Union 74, Lone Tree 39
The Wolves just keep winning as they improve to 13-1 on the season behind 31 points and 15 rebounds from Cam Buffington.
Hillcrest Academy 51, Louisa-Muscatine 25
Hillcrest Academy gets back on track with the win over Louisa-Muscatine. The Ravens had lost their last two.
The Ravens held the Falcons to single digits in every quarter, while allowing just eight points in the first half, 24-8. In the second, Hillcrest continued to roll with a big third quarter, outscoring Louisa-Muscatine 18-9 and leading 42-17. The Ravens capped of the win with a 9-8 fourth.
Hillcrest improves to 8-3 on season.
Pekin 45, Wapello 43
Pekin never trailed at any quarter’s end Tuesday night, but Wapello was always right in the rear view.
The Panthers held just a one-point lead, 13-12, after one, but followed up with a 12-6 second quarter to gain some breathing room heading into the second half holding a 25-18 lead. Wapello bounced back with a 12-6 quarter of its own to make it once against a one point game. In the fourth, the Panthers were able to outlast the Indians, winning the quarter by just one, 14-13.
Pekin moves to 5-8.
Mediapolis 51, Highland 37
Highland fought for as long as they could against the Southeast Super Conference North second place Bulldogs.
The Huskies came out swinging, holding a 14-9 leading after one, but the Bulldogs gradually made their move. Highland was outscored the rest of the way.
Mediapolis won the second 11-10, but Highland still held a 24-20 lead heading into the locker room. In the third, the Bulldogs scored nine to the Huskies five, tying the game, 29-29, heading into the fourth. Mediapolis dominated in the fourth, nearly besting its point total from the previous three quarter and outscoring Highland 22-8.
With the loss the Huskies drop to 1-12.
Holy Trinity Catholic 62, Van Buren County 52
Van Buren County held the lead for three quarters against Holy Trinity Catholic, but a stellar fourth from the Crusaders proved to be the difference.
The Warriors jumped out to an early 17-10 lead after one, but the Crusaders slowly slimmed the margin over the second and third. By the end of the third, Van Buren clung onto a 38-34 lead.
In the fourth, it was all Holy Trinity. The Crusaders won the fourth while tallying 28 points, nearly topping their total throughout the previous three quarters, and holding Van Buren to just 14.
The Warriors fall to 2-9 with the loss.
Belle Plaine 60, Keota 49
Keota was outscored in the first three quarters in the matchup with Belle Plaine.
The Eagles were outscored 15-10 in the first and 14-8 in the second, giving the Plainsmen a 29-18 lead at the break. Following a 18-15 third put together by Belle Plaine, Keota trailed 47-33 heading into the fourth. The Eagles won the fourth 16-13, but ran out of time to stage any kind of comeback.
Evan Vittetoe led Keota with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Sawyer Stout added 11 points. Keota slides to 7-7 on the season.
