WELLMAN — It took until the second half at the Wellman Rotary Fields Friday for the eighth-ranked team in Class 1A to find the back of the net, but the Golden Hawks located that goal three times and defeated the Prince of Peace Irish in boys soccer 3-0.
Owen Trimpe netted all three goals with Zeus Fugate assisting on a pair of the scores and Gunnar Gingerich’s assist enabling the other.
Mid-Prairie (5-0) had 23 shots, 12 on goal while the Irish (2-4) had eight. Keaton Graber made four saves.
Mid-Prairie plays at Columbus (5-1) today.
Wildcats clip Ravens
KALONA — Columbus defeated Hillcrest (2-2) Thursday 2-0.
The Ravens found it difficult to maintain possession of the ball in their offensive end. With a slight wind at its back, Columbus was generating scoring chances and found the net with about 10 minutes left in the first half off a head ball on a corner kick. Early in the second half, Columbus lofted a ball into the box.
Hillcrest coach Marcus Miller said a Hillcrest defender got his head to the ball, knocking it toward goal keeper Aaron Krabill, who “made a valiant effort” on the ball but a “bit of a scrum ensued” and Columbus poked it into the net for the 2-0.
In an attempt to generate some offense, Hillcrest pushed Noah Miller to the forward line and defender Eli Ours into more of a midfield role. “This worked to generate some offense, but Hillcrest found it difficult to convert the chances it created,” Miller said.
Columbus plays No. 2 (Class 1A) Notre Dame Tuesday. Hillcrest hosts Mediapolis Thursday.
Miller, golfers help Hillcrest
KALONA — Saturday morning Hillcrest defeated Cedar Valley Christian, 1-0. Aaron Hershberger started his first game in goal and made seven saves in the shutout. The match’s lone goal happened with 7 minutes remaining in the first half when Noah Miller took a throw-in from Dominic Bouse, then beat two defenders before launching a shot from 20 yards out that caromed into the goal off the bottom of the crossbar.
Four members of the Hillcrest golf team played due to absences. One of them, Luke Schrock scored on a pass from Miller, but it was negated for offsides.
Hillcrest improves to 2-2

The Golden Hawks are 5-2 and host Union today then go to Mediapolis Tuesday.
