BREAKING: Washington softball, Hillcrest Academy baseball to state

Two Union area summer sports teams punched their tickets to next week’s state tournaments on a jam-packed Tuesday night.
In Davenport, 10th-ranked (3A) Washington softball team staged a thrilling comeback victory over No. 4 Assumption, beating the Knights 6-4 to earn their first state appearance since 2013.
In Fairfield, Hillcrest Academy won a battle of area teams, beating Pekin 1-0 in the local Class 1A baseball championship. Hillcrest is off to state for the first time in 2008 after scoring the lone run of the game in the first inning.
The Union area did suffer a loss in a Class 2A Substate final, where Cardinal came up one run short against South Central Conference foe Chariton, falling 4-3 in Ottumwa.
Stay tuned to the Union website on Wednesday for stories from all three games, and for the Union newspaper on Thursday, which will have results from those three games, as well as Highland’s thrilling regional final victory on Monday night, and Fairfield’s season-ending loss to Pella in the substate semifinals.
