Strong 2nd half leads Bishop Garrigan past Wolves in 8-Player football semifinals

CEDAR FALLS — In a game that ended right at presstime for the Southeast Iowa Union, the top-ranked Winfield-Mount Union football team was eliminated from the Class 8-Player football semifinals on Wednesday at the UNI-Dome.
The Wolves fell 34-20 to Bishop Garrigan, ending a dream season, that saw WMU make the semifinals for the first time since the 1999 season.
The Wolves had a strong first half, leading 20-6 at the break, but injuries were piling up all game long, and the Golden Bears eventually wore down the Wolves before breaking out in the second half.
After a 20-20 tie in the third quarter, Bishop Garrigan scored the only two touchdowns of the fourth to run away with the victory.
The loss was WMU’s first of the season. The Wolves came into the semifinals with an 11-0 record, and will end the season 11-1.
Cam Buffington scored two touchdowns in the first half, the first of which was set up by a long completion to Carter Loyd.
Abram Edwards had five catches for 81 yards and a touchdown, which came in the second quarter off the pass of Jake Edwards.
Jake Edwards completed 13 passes for 212 yards and one touchdown.
The Wolves’ defense created two turnovers. Loyd had a fumble recovery, and Milks picked off a pass, both in the first half.
By the end of the game, injuries took their told and then some for the Wolves. Many of the team’s star players were hobbled or knocked out of the game. WMU came into the semifinals with injuries, and lost even more players during the game.
Bishop Garrigan running back Caden Roethler ran for 186 yards and four touchdowns.
