Wolves win Round 1
Winfield-Mount Union explodes in the 4th, moves on to Class 1A state basketball semifinals
DES MOINES — In a game that finished up just after usual press time for the Southeast Iowa Union’s Tuesday paper, the Winfield-Mount Union boys basketball team picked up its first win at the state basketball tournament since the turn of the century.
“This is pretty special," said Winfield-Mount Union head coach Klay Edwards. "It's been quite awhile since we've had someone back up here. Not just for Winfield, but for Southeast Iowa.”
WMU, seeded No. 4 in the Class 1A tournament, used a 17-0 run at the start of the fourth quarter to blow past No. 5 seed Lynnville-Sully 54-37, earning the Wolves their first semifinal berth since 1996.
The Wolves scored the first seven points of the game, and never trailed, leading 7-2 after one quarter, 21-18 at halftime and 32-26 after three quarters. The Hawks cut the Wolves’ lead to as close as one point, at 21-20, early in the third quarter.
Despite sitting for most of the third period with foul trouble, Cam Buffington led WMU with 21 points and nine rebounds. Carter Loyd finished with 12 points and five rebounds. Abram Edwards had nine points, five assists and four blocked shots. Jake Edwards scored nine points, and Gabriel Hemsworth finished with three.
With the win, Winfield-Mount Union moves on to play against top-seeded North Linn on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The winner of that will earn a ticket to the Class 1A state championship game.
