Breard named MWC Hitter of the Week

MOUNT VERNON ? Cornell's Walker Breard of Washington has been named Midwest Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week for the period ending May 7.

Breard, a two-time weekly honoree this spring, had a huge day at the plate in Sunday's 18-5, 7-3 sweep of Grinnell that propelled the Rams into this week's MWC Tournament.

Breard went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and school-record eight RBIs in the Game 1 postseason clincher at South Division champion Grinnell. The junior first baseman finished that doubleheader with six hits, two runs and nine RBIs.

In seven games last week, Breard batted .400 (10-for-25) with six runs, three extra-base hits and 10 RBIs. He also walked seven times, raising his school-record season total to 32.

For the season, Breard heads the Ram lineup with a .381 batting average, 12 doubles, seven home runs and 37 RBIs.

The Rams (18-18 overall, 12-8 MWC) open tournament play at 9 a.m. Friday in a neutral-site game against North Division champion St. Norbert (26-10, 15-2 MWC) at Newton's Woodland Park.
