WATERLOO - Mt. Pleasant juniors Corbin Broeker and Jaxon Hoyle competed in the Class 1A state doubles tournament on Friday in Ft. Dodge. In a tournament that had to be moved inside due to weather concerns, the duo went 0-2.
Hoyle and Broeker began their day against Grinnell's Lewis Jolly and A.J. Wilkins. The Panthers fell 6-3 in the first set and then lost a nail-biter, 7-6(4) in the second set. Jolly and Wilkins went on to take fourth place overall.
The Panther doubles team played against Ballard's Caleb Hammerlinck and Max Olsan in the consolation bracket. Hammerlinck and Olsan swept 6-3 and 7-5 to knock Mt. Pleasant out of the tournament.
The tournament was won by Norwalk's A.J. Clarkwilt and Drew Hall. They took out the top Cedar Rapids Xavier duo of Brady Horstmann and Hugh Courter in the championship match, sweeping 6-4 and 6-4.
Broeker and Hoyle's state run finished out tennis season for the spring of 2019. The Mt. Pleasant tennis team will bring back seven of their eight players from this year when the spring rolls back around in 2020.
