DES MOINES — Four Union area leapers entered Thursday’s Drake Relays high jump competition with statewide glory on their minds. In the most area-packed field event on the weekend, it was Mid-Prairie’s Cain Brown that stood the tallest.
The Golden Hawks senior set a new personal best at the blue oval. Brown took third in a stacked field after clearing 6 foot 9 inches, out-dueling three familiar faces to get the job done.
New London’s Kade Benjamin was right there with Brown through 6 foot 7. Benjamin couldn’t improve on that, but he ended up with a sixth-place finish.
The Union area had three in the Top-10 in that event. Columbus’ Triston Miller kicked off a busy weekend for the Wildcats by clearing 6-foot-5, to take 9th place overall.
Van Buren County’s Tyler Stoltz cleared 6-foot-1. He took home a 24th-place finish in the event.
That wasn’t the only field event that included multiple Union area athletes. Washington’s Brayden Hartman and Mt. Pleasant’s Isaac Jerrel both took part in the shot put, and Hartman brought home a Top-10 finish.
Hartman threw 53 feet, 8 inches to take eighth place in the boys shot put competition. Jerrel finished in 23rd, throwing 48 feet, 0.50 inches.
The only other area thrower going on Thursday was Pekin’s Anna Hadley. She threw the discus 110 feet even to take 22nd in just her freshman campaign.
The Union area did have one runner on the track for the girls’ 3000-meter run later in the night. Mid-Prairie’s Danielle Hostetler added to her career accolades with a final time of 10 minutes. 16.66 seconds.
