Buchholz sets record in hurdles

Washington saw a part of its record book rewritten on Tuesday night.

Demon junior Jessie Buchholz used her strong day in the hurdles to insert herself into the record books, setting a school record in the 100-meter hurdles at the Panther Relays in Mt. Pleasant.

?Jessie had a phenomenal night, she had a solid split in our shuttle (which had its fastest time of the season) and then had a great race in the 100 hurdles,? Washington girls? track coach Stefanie Tschantz said. ?She has been really trying to get in the 16s and for her to run a 16.73 and set a new school record last night was definitely a huge highlight for us.

?Jessie is really coming on right now,? Tschantz said. ?I expect that to continue as the season continues. I know she is eyeing the state meet and she is looking good right now to get there.?

In addition to Buchholz?s third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles, she also added a personal best in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing in second with a 1:13.78.

Washington saw strong meets from a number of other athletes, including senior McKayla Miller?s meet title in the shot put, using a toss of 32 feet ? 7.75 inches for the crown.

Kelly Wheeler added a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a 13.23, while Makenzie Knutson earned a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a 1:15.89.

Molly Sparks also set a season-best time in the 800-meter run, using a 2:39.61 to take fifth place.

In the relays, Washington?s 4x100, 4x200, 4x800, shuttle hurdle and distance medley all posted their top times of the year.

?I don?t think there was just one event that impressed me the most last night,? Tschantz said. ?It seemed like every time we stepped on the track we had a great race, and all of our times were dropping. There was great competition last night which made our girls really step up and run hard.?

The Washington girls? track team is preparing for its home relays on Thursday afternoon, and there will be added importance, with that being the final day to qualify for the Drake Relays.

Field events for the meet will start at 4:30, with running events at 5.
