The Iowa Print Sportswriters Association released its 2023-24 All-State teams on Tuesday, and a trio of Union area athletes are on the list.
Winfield-Mount Union senior Cam Buffington, Mt. Pleasant senior Payton Hagans and Keota senior Sawyer Stout were all named to the 2023-24 squads.
Buffington is making his debut on the All-State basketball squad, doing so in his final season. He had a tremendous year for the Wolves, who ended their season last week in the Class 1A state semifinals.
Buffington led the Wolves with 18.8 points per game this season. He also pulled down 7.4 rebounds per game, 3.6 assists per game, 1.7 steals per game and one block per game.
Along with the All-State squad, Buffington was the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division’s Player of the Year this winter. He also made the Class 1A All-Tournament team.
Hagans is coming off another fantastic year for the Panthers, which saw the Mt. Pleasant senior win the 2023-24 Southeast Conference Player of the Year award.
Hagans has already been an All-Stater, earning a second-team nod last season. He returned to the second team after leading Mt. Pleasant with 22.8 points per game this winter.
Along with scoring, Hagans pulled down 5.9 rebounds per game, which put him second on the team. Hagans coled the team with 2.9 assists per game and led the Panthers with 2.3 steals per game as well.
Stout, another senior, led the Eagles to an undefeated season up until the Substate semifinals. He scored 20.9 points per game to lead Keota on the year.
Along with his big year scoring the basketball, Stout dished out 2.1 assists per game and finished the year with 1.6 steals per game as well.
MOC-Floyd Valley senior Jesse Van Kalsbeek was named 2023-24 Mr. Basketball in the state of Iowa.
