WINFIELD — Winfield-Mount Union senior Cooper Buffington will be going northwest next fall.
Buffington, fresh off his senior season for the Wolves, signed a letter of intent last Wednesday to play college football at the University of Montana, in Missoula.
“They came down to watch me work out earlier in the school year,” Buffington said. “I went out there to camp on June 8, and they offered me later that week.”
Buffington, a two-time All-State offensive lineman, will likely play on the defensive line for the Grizzlies, but isn’t sure whether he’ll play on the end or the interior.
This year on defense, Buffington led the Wolves with 57 tackles. He had 12 tackles for a loss and two fumble recoveries.
Buffington joins a Montana squad that went 9-5 overall this year. Last fall, the Grizzlies made it to the FCS title game.
Buffington, who is undecided on a college major, said he loved the cold weather and atmosphere when he made his visit.
“When I got off the plane, I jokingly said if they offer me, I'm going to commit,” Buffington said. “It came true I guess.”
Buffington is the second member of his family, and third WMU player in two seasons to sign with a Division 1 school. Cousin Cam Buffington committed to Iowa last year, and teammate Abram Edwards went to Army.
