KEOKUK ? A full week of rest went into the legs of the Fairfield girls? track team before Tuesday?s Keosippi Relays in Keokuk ? a meet that gives the Trojans even more to build on with the conference meet looming in a few weeks.
Using true team scoring, which essentially gives team points to every participant, emphasis is put on team depth and Fairfield ended up in third place with 246 points. That score was well ahead of two conference rivals as Fort Madison placed fourth (204.5) and Keokuk brought up the rear with 162.5. Burlington won the meet with 276.5 and Mount Pleasant took second with 264.5.
The scoring format made no difference to throwers Katie Hammes and Melonie Brown however, as the duo put together an impressive performance with Hammes winning both the shot put (37? 4?) and discus (100? 2?). Brown finished behind only Hammes in the discus (87? 6?) and took third in the shot put (31? 11?) to total four top-three finishes in the throwing events.
?We had some kids that performed well, others that did not, but our throwers got us a lot of points. As did Libbey [Schubert] in the sprints,? said Fairfield head coach Ron Hunerdosse.
In those sprint events, Schubert dominated with a pair of victories in the 100 (13.09) and 200-meter dashes (27.14) ? winning the 200 with well over a second of cushion. Schubert also anchored the third-place 4x100-meter relay (54.11) team that was started by Edna Jones, Kiersten Vaughan and Annie Buch.
Brittney Fry is certainly no stranger to a baton, but got an opportunity to showcase her talent in an open event and ended up taking second-place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:05.50. Fry then stayed true to form in both of her relay events as she anchored two more second-place finishes in the 4x800 (10:31.27) and 4x400 (4:31.61). Mackenzie Laux, Amanda Melcher and Dana Diers joined in the 4x800 and Amanda Lamb, Vaughan and Buch comprised the 4x400.
Other top finishes came from Maryn Fulton who, after experiencing a mid-season drop off in the high jump, returned to form clearing the bar at four-feet, 10-inches to finish third. The shuttle hurdle relay with Fulton, Rachel Swanson, Vaughan and Chelsey Taylor also placed third with a time of 1:14.69.
